Mom’s Original Chocolate Drop Cookies
(adapted from The American Woman’s Cookbook, ed.1939)
2 squares chocolate 1 egg
½ cup shortening 2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar ½ cup sweet milk
½ teaspoon soda
Melt the chocolate and add to the melted shortening. Add sugar, egg and milk, then the soda and flour sifted together. Drop by spoonfuls on greased pans, and bake in a moderate oven (375° F. 400° F., 12 to 15 minutes). Frost, if desired.
A very simple buttercream frosting can be made
using one stick of softened butter to which you gradually add
one box of sifted (or slowly poured*) confectioners’ sugar, and vanilla extract to taste
AND A
small amount of milk or cream,
mixing, until smooth and creamy.
*Note: You really do not need a sifter; just add de-lumped confectioners sugar gradually, i.e., by tablespoonsful, to the softened, beaten butter.
